Surface Treatment
Many materials used in modern products (metals, plastics, composites) need to be treated before adhesive is applied, or they are painted or printed on. This is partly to remove dirt and grease, and partly to activate the surface to make it more "wettable". Various chemical treatments are available, but this can be inconvenient, and the chemicals may need special handling and disposal due to their toxic or carcinogenic nature.
Atmospheric plasma can be employed to achieve similar results, without the drawbacks of wet chemical treatment, and if the temperature of the plasma can be controlled, the plasma can be used on heat sensitive surfaces and in heat sensitive environments.
